Building & Technical Manager

Position Summary

The Building & Technical Manager (BTM) is responsible for maintaining the Basil Burwell Theater facility and overseeing the technical execution of Belfast Maskers productions. This role ensures that the building, equipment, and backstage operations are safe, functional, and ready to support high-quality performances. The BTM partners closely with the Artistic Director to bring each production's artistic vision to life through sound, lighting, set, and backstage coordination.

This role requires both technical theater expertise and a passion for community theater, as the compensation reflects a blend of paid work and volunteer commitment.

This is a part-time position with flexible hours based on production schedules, maintenance needs, and event activity. The BTM is expected to be on-site as needed during technical rehearsals, load-ins, and performances but has flexibility in managing other responsibilities independently.

Core Responsibilities

Technical Production Oversight

  • Oversee technical execution of all productions, ensuring lighting, sound, and set construction are coordinated and completed. Provide guidance, troubleshooting, and backup support when technical gaps arise.
  • Collaborate with directors and the Artistic Director to meet creative and logistical needs.
  • Recruit and coordinate technical volunteers and designers as needed.
  • Maintain and organize technical inventory, tools, and equipment.
  • Provide basic troubleshooting and repair of lighting, sound, and stage systems.

Building Maintenance & Safety

  • Oversee general upkeep of the Basil Burwell Theater, ensuring a clean, safe, and functional facility.
  • Conduct routine inspections and address maintenance issues directly or by coordinating with vendors/volunteers.
  • Manage seasonal tasks (snow removal coordination, leaf cleanup, etc.) and ensure walkways and entryways are safe.
  • Communicate with the building cleaner to ensure the facility is prepared for rehearsals, performances, and events.
  • Coordinate with the Building & Grounds Committee on larger maintenance projects or capital improvements.
  • Maintain building access systems (including lockbox codes) and communicate updates to the appropriate parties.

Production & Event Support

  • Work with the Artistic Director and Marketing Committee to ensure the Maskers' production schedule is accurately represented on the master calendar.
  • Support logistical needs for Maskers performances and approved rentals, including building access, setup, and post-event cleanup.
  • Ensure renters and outside users follow facility guidelines and that the space is restored to proper condition afterward.
  • Provide or coordinate building orientation for renters, visiting artists, and volunteers as needed.

Volunteer Coordination & Community Engagement

  • Recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers to assist with technical, maintenance, and production support tasks.
  • Create a positive and inclusive environment for volunteers to learn and contribute.
  • Maintain accountability for all assigned work, ensuring that volunteer contributions meet safety and quality standards.
  • Foster community relationships that support the ongoing care and improvement of the theatre facility.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Partner with the Artistic Director to ensure strong alignment between creative and technical aspects of each production.
  • Attend monthly Board of Directors meetings and provide a Building & Technical Manager report.
  • Maintain clear and timely communication with the Board, committees, and production teams.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, problem-solving, and the ability to work effectively with a range of personalities common in theatre settings.

Compensation

Approximately $9,600 annually ($800/month). This is a part-time position that combines paid work with significant volunteer commitment to community theater.

Reporting & Term

The Building & Technical Manager reports to the Board of Directors and works in close partnership with the Artistic Director. The appointment is reviewed annually by the Board.
